How verification works

The four verification levels, what each one checks, where the data comes from, and how long it takes.

Every contractor moves through four verification levels. Each level is a set of checks. Each check has a status, the evidence behind it, a source, a date, and (usually) an expiry that triggers an automatic re-check.

The four levels

LevelBadgeWhat we checkTypical turnaround
L1Identity VerifiedEntity in good standing, EIN matches the legal name, owner ID and selfie, business addressMinutes
L2Licensed & InsuredTrade licenses, general liability, workers' comp, auto, umbrella, bonds1-5 business days
L3Safety & Financial ReviewedOSHA 300/300A logs, TRIR and DART, EMR, safety programs, citations, credit, liens, sanctions3-7 business days
L4AuditedAn auditor visits a live job and interviews workersScheduled, 2-4 weeks

You hold a level when every required check at that level, and every level below it, is verified and current. Optional checks (umbrella, bonding, diversity certificates) show on your profile but don't gate the badge.

Where the data comes from

  • Business identity: your state's Secretary of State registry and IRS TIN matching through a provider.
  • Owner identity: a government ID plus a selfie liveness check, run by our ID verification provider. We never store the raw ID images on your public profile.
  • Licenses: the issuing state or city board. We re-check every 30 days and again 30 days before expiry.
  • Insurance: your certificate of insurance (ACORD 25), read by AI and confirmed by an analyst, plus a confirmation email to your broker.
  • Safety: your OSHA logs and EMR letter, and OSHA's public enforcement data.
  • Sanctions: OFAC and SAM.gov exclusion lists, screened weekly.

Check statuses

Each check has exactly one status:

  • Not started and Submitted: nothing to review yet, or waiting in the queue.
  • In review: an analyst is looking at it.
  • Verified: confirmed, with the source and date shown.
  • Rejected: something didn't pass. You'll see the reason and exactly how to fix it.
  • Expiring: verified, but expires within 30 days.
  • Expired: past its expiry date. An expired license or insurance policy caps your grade at D until fixed.
  • Flagged: an analyst needs to look closer.
  • Waived: a specific client waived the requirement for you, with a reason and an expiry.

What happens after you submit

  1. Automated checks (L1 business records, license lookups, sanctions) run within minutes.
  2. Documents go through virus scanning and tamper checks, then AI extraction.
  3. High-confidence results that pass every rule are verified automatically; 10% are sampled for analyst review. Everything else goes to an analyst.
  4. You get an email and an in-app notification for each verified or rejected check.
  5. Reminders go out 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before anything expires.

Need it faster? Expedited Review gets an analyst on your submission within one business day. It changes speed only, never the result.
